Perry lost the finger on his right hand when he was just three years old

He suffered the injury at nursery school when his finger got trapped in a door that was violently slammed shut. Perry discussed the incident in a TV interview, where he went on to explain that between the ages of three and eight, he would hide his injured hand in his pocket. But that changed when he met an airplane pilot who was also missing the tip of a finger, back when young kids could visit the cockpit of planes.

“So from three to, I guess eight or something, I had my hand in my pocket to hide it. I was on a flight with my mom, we were flying somewhere and this is back in the day when they would sometimes bring little kids to the cockpit you know, to meet the pilot, show all the buttons and all of that stuff.” And I was very excited about that, and I went up to the cockpit, and I was looking around… and I was so distracted that for the very first time, hand not in my pocket.”
